The full moon rising above a rusting Beyer Garratt steam locomotive in the Uyuni train graveyard / cemetery in southwest Bolivia. Many of the trains get covered by graffiti, someone had painted this superb pirate onto this one! The Garratt / Beyer Garratt is a type of articulated steam locomotive invented by British engineer Herbert William Garratt to allow the locomotives to negotiate tight curves that might restrict large rigid-framed locomotives. They consisted of three parts; the boiler, firebox and cab were mounted on a centre frame. The other two parts at each end had the wheels, valve gear, cylinders and tenders for fuel and water storage. Several of these locomotives were used by the the Antofagasta and Bolivia Railway; Uyuni lies in the high altiplano and one of the routes from there drops steeply to Antofagasta on the Chilean coast.
